Ocean City, Maryland Boardwalk, Tuesday evening [NFB]

It was summertime and even if it meant listening to Danny tell everyone--repeatedly--that the boardwalk in Maryland wasn't nearly as good as the one in Jersey, Steve couldn't get through a summer without scaring the 17 year old kid in charge of the shooting range and winning a stupidly large stuffed thing.

Having Diego with him to provide actual competition didn't hurt, either.

"Okay, last round and then we find some food," he told his companions.

He'd said that three rounds ago.

Annie, who had been eyeing a Test Your Strength booth and debating how amusing she felt like being tonight (probably not attention-attractingly amusing, sadly), contributed, "I mean, we can totally get deep-fried Oreos or whatever and come back to winning at things."

It wasn't mutually exclusive. (Also, Annie: gross.)

"Hey, I've been trying to get a funnel cake for the last twenty minutes." Like he could help the fact he couldn't say no to another round when Steve asked.

"Bitch, bitch, bitch," Steve muttered, firing and hitting another bullseye as it lurched past.

"I'd like to also eat fried foods sometime before I retire," Danny chimed in, making sure it was right when the next target was coming along.

"Maybe we should try the dart game after we get food," Annie said with a sunny smile at Diego, leaning against the counter. "That looked like fun."

And, you know, kind of like cheating. In a way.

"Yes, definitely." Because he could win that while eating a funnel cake at the same time. "I'll get you the biggest stuffed animal they have and then we can make it share the guest bedroom with Five."

"I have several follow-up questions about that," Steve said, hitting his last shot despite Danny's distraction and picking out a laughably huge purple monkey. He handed the monkey--well, heaved--at Danny. "For Grace."

Danny rolled his eyes, but accepted the monkey. "I'm telling her I won it. Now let's get food and watch Diego win a rigged game."

Did the game worker go, "Heeeeey." at that? Maybe.

Annie shot the worker a smile before moving to slide her arm through Diego's. "So funnel cake? Because I'm pretty sure I've heard it's like, illegal to go somewhere with funnel cake and not actually eat some? I don't make the rules, you guys, I just enforce them."

“Funnel cake then darts,” he said with a nod. “I prefer my carnival games gun-free.”

Tiny Diego had a catchphrase about it and everything.

"Funnel cake can have fruit on it and counts as healthy," Steve decreed. "Now. Why is Five in your guest room?"

"Because he's family," Danny said, smacking Steve's arm like a person who did not understand the sheer level of dysfunction there.

"Sometimes it's just convenient," Annie added easily. "We're a lot closer to the bar than the dorms are."

There, have some dysfunction.

"And I'm sure his roommate is creeped out by Dolores," Diego said. Then to Steve, "I still would avoid him for a bit after what you did to her, by the way. I don't think paintball is going to exact the kind of revenge he wants."

"Yeah, I've head my head on a swivel," Steve admitted. "I saw him work at that thing with the guy."

Very subtle, Steve. Surely no one here will know you're talking about The Deep.

"Uh huh." Danny was judging you both right now.

Annie wanted to ask about the 'thing with the guy,' but considering that everyone here knew that she knew about the thing with the guy, she had to think that was code for Danny's benefit? So she could play ball, sure.

"You really probably didn't need to tackle her or whatever," Annie added, not unsympathetically. "I mean, I get it, but he's probably going to hold a grudge."

Which was why Annie had adopted the practice of, like, inviting Dolores to girls' nights. Like a fucking lunatic.

"I think the line was crossed when he choked the mannequin out," Diego said. "No, when he put the blindfold and gag on her. That's when the line was crossed."

It had been a weird couple days by then.

"In my defense--" Steve began because he might be the only person that didn't realize there wasn't a defense for this, "--I had spent the better part of two weeks pretending like I could understand raccoons. It was a dark time."

He...might not have brought any of this up with Danny yet.

"I am going to need an explanation of this," Danny said, raising his voice.

"Oh, hey, I think I see funnel cake over there!" Annie declared in a totally subtle way, squeezing Diego's arm and pointing.

Over there. That way. There had to be funnel cake in that random direction, right?

"But I want to watch this." You'd think it be just as humiliating for him since he was the one handcuffed to a radiator but, nope.

Steve beamed at Diego. "Five had handcuffed Diego to the radiator so I infiltrated the area, subdued his assailant, and broke him free."

Rappelled down a building, broke a window, tackled and gagged a mannequin, and jimmied a lock. But the other way sounded cooler.

"A mannequin, Steven?" Danny countered, not really finding it to be nearly as cool as Steve thought it was.
