Nothing said "welcome back" like immediately walking into a double homicide investigation, but Steve was eager for the distraction since his Aunt Deb had made a surprise visit for Thanksgiving...and brought her fiancé with her.

And yeah, this was probably better news than the cancer diagnosis from last Thanksgiving, but he didn't know anything about "Leonard Cassano," if that was even his real name. He'd do a quick background check once they got back to the office.

But for now...he turned to Danny as they walked into an absolutely ridiculous waterfront mansion. "Tell me what we've got."

"The case or your paranoia over your aunt's new beau?" Danny asked, looking over his notes anyway.

"I'm not paranoid," Steve said. Wrongly. "And he's not her beau. He's her fiancé. They're getting married this weekend."

SO GREAT, DANNY. THIS WAS SO GREAT.

"Right," Danny replied dryly, clearly judging him even as he brought him up to date on the details of the case that they knew right now.

Steve dispatched Max to run through the autopsies and let them know if anything was interesting, but from the look of the room, "I don't think the killer even came in, judging by the rounds on the ground. We're not going to get fingerprints or DNA."

"What are you thinkin'?" Danny said, looking over the scene himself with a critical eye.

"I'm thinking a house this nice has to have surveillance cameras," Steve said, crunching through broken glass to get outside and look around. "Maybe they caught something useful."

His eyes caught a family portrait sitting on top of an expensive piano. "Do we know where the kids are?"

Danny eyed the photos to gage their ages. "Slept at a friend's place last night," Danny said. "HPD picked them up."

Steve pressed his lips together in sympathy. "Okay, let's do the standard work-up back at the office and figure out who these two were."

And he could also learn about Leonard! Win/win.

"And you can be your usual paranoid self about your aunt's husband to be," Danny filled in for him.

"It's too fast," Steve muttered, frowning as he climbed into the driver's side of Danny's car.

"It's too fast," Danny repeated slowly.

Steve, they both had terminal diagnoses.

Don't expect logic in this, Danny.

"It's not that I don't like him," Steve said. "There's just something off about him."

"Something more than he's marrying your aunt?" Danny had to ask.

"He's a retired teacher and he tips like a rapper," Steve said, taking a corner too hard.

"Well, you can't take it with you," Danny pointed out, clutching at the oh shit handle.

"That's what he said!" Steve replied, sounding aggrieved. "And since when does a retired shop teacher hand out legal advice?"

"One who has had to figure out their will situation?" Danny asked. "I don't know. You don't know either."

Dammit, Danny, he didn't need logic in this. "And his hands," he concluded. "They were...they were beautiful! All smooth. He should be working with tools, right?"

"You're bumping on his hands?" Steve, now Danny was just concerned.

[grenadesandohana]

"It's off," Steve insisted, swinging into Danny's parking space.

Danny sighed so very loud at that. "Have you talked to Deb about it?"

"Of course not," Steve said. "I need evidence first."

[hatesparadise]

"Steven." That was not helping your case!

THIS WAS ALL EXTREMELY NORMAL.

Steve shrugged and headed into the office. "Just want her to be safe."

"Well, maybe you need to trust her here or, I don't know, talk to her about your weird paranoia," Danny suggested, catching up with him.
