MCA #0, Sunday morning [too damn early]

So it turned out that the cool apartment with no good cereal he'd woken up in yesterday was also where Dectective Williams lived, so Steve was being extra careful not to wake him up as he dragged chairs and sofas around the living room-kitchen-bar area to make an extremely epic Floor Is Lava game.

Steve clambored up onto the bar to jump from there to a extremely wobbly pile of sofa cushions. "WHEEEEEEE!"

That was not quiet, Steve. But then, neither was dragging sofas around.

You know what? This all sounded exactly like the Steve he knew.

Danny stumbled out of bed, hair an absolute mess to investigate the noise. Was he wearing a Navy shirt again? Look, it was comfortable and it had been clean. Yes.

"Oh, no, this is not happening."

"Hi!" Steve said, carefully moving the pillows so he could hop along them to jump onto a kitchen chair.

"Hi," Danny said dryly, rubbing sleep from his eyes. "What are you doing?"

"Not getting set on fire from the lava," Steve told him, biting his lip as he concentrated.

"Ah. Of course," Danny said, pretending like that made perfect sense. "How is that going for you?"

"Good," Steve proclaimed, stretttttching to reach the chair with his one good arm.

Danny hummed again, moving toward the kitchen and nudging the chair closer to the kid on his way. "I'm making pancakes if you want to help."

"I'm good at pancakes!" Steve said, climbing onto the chair.

He wasn't.

He was probably as good as future Steve at it.

"Well, good. I need an assistant for it," Danny replied easily. "How about banana chocolate chip?"

He was cheating in knowing what Steve liked.

"Both?!" Steve looked thrilled. "Please!"

"How about you slice the bananas for me," Danny suggested, kind of enjoying this Steve who didn't have as much of a filter on himself.

Which was awful of him, he knew that. But he could still wish this kid had been allowed to keep that part of him growing up.

"I'll be careful," Steve promised, finding a butter knife and cutting the banana into coins.

"Great job," Danny said, glancing over to check on him as he mixed the batter together. "You done this before?"

Steve nodded. "For my cereal," he said.

"Alright, want to flip a pancake?" Since the first one was always a mess anyway.

Look, the dad thing was just instinct here. Weird, weird instinct.

Steve really wanted to flip a pancake. "Is it too hot?" he asked worriedly.

Danny put his hand over the skillet, barely touching it. Because normal cook things. "Nah, you're good. Just pour some batter into the pan and we wait for little bubbles to show up. That's the trick, you see."

"Are you fire proof?" Steve asked, deeply impressed. "I met a girl who could make her eyes go all yellow yesterday."

[hatesparadise]

"Nah, you cook enough, you get a sense for it." And how to be fast enough to do that.

[grenadesandohana]

"Wow," Steve said. "You must be super old."

[hatesparadise]

"Wow," Danny replied with a wry laugh. "Cut to the quick."

[grenadesandohana]

Steve was busy eating some of the bananas he'd cut. "Huh?"

[hatesparadise]

"Never mind, kiddo." It was going to be brought up when Steve was normal because that was hilarious. "Bring the bananas over and we can do the first one."

"Do I get to check to make sure the chocolate chips haven't gone bad?"

That's not a thing, Steve.

"You know, you might need to test them for me to make sure," Danny said seriously.
