It was very weird that they'd been back in Honolulu for weeks now, solving cases like stolen WWII katanas, attempting to arrest bad guys for parking violations only to have them be criminal genius hackers, clearing bad guys-but-not-for-that-crime's names (you're posthumously welcome, Parrish), and the team (and more importantly, Grace) felt like they'd never been gone.

Maybe if he and Danny never went near an airport again, they wouldn't ricochet back to Fandom? Steve took a drink from his bottle of beer and stared out at the waves, mulling that possibility over.

The rest of Five-0 was laughing on the lanai behind him: their celebration on clearing Parrish's name had moved from a bar to his house as some kind of positive re-enforcement for him picking up the tab this time, apparently. They were currently grilling up steaks, so he couldn't get too upset about it.

He smiled to himself as Chin's voice loudly defending Don Ho's artistic achievements reached him on the shore. Apparently they were back to arguing about music. It felt nice to have his 'ohana around him again.

He wondered how long it would last.

"I'll see what I can find!" Steve promised, laughing. He returned five minutes later with two beers, two steaks, and Grace.

"You're welcome," Steve said, handing the plate to Danny. "That was Kono's and now she's vowing revenge on you."

"You showing off for Kono?" Danny asked, scooting over on his chair to let Grace sit with him.

"And Uncle Steve," Grace said, plopping down to steal food off his plate.

Steve grinned at her. "So you were defending your friend, huh?"

He was only going to encourage this, Danny, both the stealing of your food and the punching of assholes.

Joke was on Steve, he was a parent, this was just his lot in life. This and eating whatever weird shaped chicken nugget or pizza that was left behind on her plate was his life for the last decade.

Grace nodded solemnly while Danny shot him A Look over her head. "Kono showed me how to catch their arm if the first punch doesn't put them down."

"I will discuss further lessons with your mom next time I see her," Danny promised.

"Good," Steve said, nodding. "Thumb on the outside, every time, alright? You don't want to break your own hand."

"Danno already taught me that."

Which made Danny look pleased and smug as he took a bite of steak.

Steve beamed at her. "Good. What else has Danno taught you?"

Danny tried to make a 'cut' sign with his hand over his throat.

"Mom got upset about it, so we had to stop at that," Grace admitted. "I liked cheer better anyway. But it was okay."

Yeah, this was what he was trying to avoid. No one won when the parents argued through the kid.

Steve looked slightly abashed.

"Well, Danno taught you well, in any case," he said. "Bet the jerks in your school will think twice before bullying anyone."

"Yeah," she said with a goofy grin that was all Danny.

Danny sighed fondly, curling an arm around her for a half hug as he gave Steve a look to communicate it wasn't his fault that divorce was tricky to navigate. "Next time talk to the teacher first. Maybe build a case."

"Nah," Steve countered. "Hit him again."

"Nope, we don't listen to Uncle Steve," Danny said, trying to cover her ears with his hands

"Danno," she whined, rolling her eyes and leaning away to try escaping his deeply embarrassing behavior.

"Always listen to your Danno," Steve said. "And also Uncle Steve."

That seemed contradictory.

This was Little League all over again, Steven.

Danny tugged her into a kiss on the crown of her head before letting her go to be that pre-teen level of over her dad's antics. "Go on. I'm sure Kono is dying to show you another take-down. And god knows she's better equipped than Steve here to teach you."

Oh, shots fired!

"She is not," Steve said very quickly, "but I can see why you'd pick her right now."

[hatesparadise]

"Sure, Uncle Steve," Grace replied, grinning at how he rose to that bait. That bait that even she, an actual child could see through.

Just you wait until she was a judgmental teenager.

"Ouch," Danny said, smirking at Steve like a big ol' jerk.

"I can handle Auntie Kono being the very temporary favorite," Steve declared magnanimously.

[hatesparadise]

"Don't get bruised," Danny said, letting her go with one more hug. "Temporary, huh?"

"That's a very hurtful thing to say, Daniel," Steve told him.

[hatesparadise]

"I didn't say anything hurtful." He just implied it.

[grenadesandohana]

"I heard it anyway," Steve said.

[hatesparadise]

"Yeah, yeah," Danny said, waving him off as he looked out at the surf. "It's--it's nice to be back."

Steve looked extremely smug to hear that. "Guess talking with the Portalocity guys worked."

Sort of.

"You're honestly taking credit for this?" Danny asked dryly.
