MCA #0, Friday evening

Steve had been gritting his teeth and pushing through pain all week, nourished only by bland, terrible food, decaf coffee, and stubbornness.

(He was also fueled by his transplant anti-rejection pills, which he'd take for the rest of his life. He hated that.)

He wasn't running, but he was definitely walking up and down the steps of the island until his calves burned, and then did it for another half hour.

(His body had betrayed him after decades of work making it a finely oiled machine. He was punishing it just a little.)

And now he was back in the apartment, looking for something interesting to eat. There was nothing interesting to eat, but he was looking anyway.

Steve took their sad little pizza over to the coffee table and settled back into the cushions with a low sigh.

"We," Danny said, depositing round two of things. "Are gonna enjoy this pizza."

Right up until they didn't!

"It smells amazing," Steve admitted. "I'm so tired of applesauce."

Just a little gastrointestinal distress.

"And bananas," Danny agreed.

"And scrambled eggs," Steve said, opening the pizza box and manfully resisting the urge to just drop his face right onto the pie.

"I still like my eggs." Burned a little. Like a heathen.

"You are the only one who likes your eggs," Steve told him.

People who microwaved omelets should shut all the way up, Steve.

"Plenty of people do!" They were both awful with eggs.

"Charlie does not count," Steve said, pulling out a piece of pizza and handing it to Danny.

"God, I love you." Was that to the pizza or Steve? It was to the pizza.

"The pizza loves you too, Daniel," Steve said dryly. He knew where he fell right now.

"Try it and fall in love, babe," Danny said, making a noise that was not suitable for children as he took a bite.

"God, the things I have to do to you to make you make that same noise," Steve teased, taking a bite of his own dinner.

Danny snorted. "You're ridiculous."

"But I'm not wrong," Steve said, trying not to eat the pizza too quickly.

"Don't burn your mouth," Danny said around a mouthful.

"Thanks, Mom," Steve retorted, not at all dwelling on whether his mother even knew about the accident. Probably, Joe had a big mouth. She hadn't made contact, though.

Danny leaned into him for that comment. "God, the pizza is good."

"It really, really is," Steve said around a mouthful of cheese.

[hatesparadise]

"We say nothing to the doc about this," Danny said, immediately going for a second slice.

"I wasn't planning on offering any information," Steve admitted.

Now, once they regret these choices in about a half an hour, they might reconsider that.

"Top secret."

[grenadesandohana]

"Of course," Steve agreed, moving more slowly with his first piece still.

Yeah, it was good, but... they were not used to eating a lot in one sitting anymore.

Danny let out a sigh that was more associated with a large pile of garlic shrimp and rice.

At least it wasn't the sound when Kamekona tried to make shrimp shave ice?

"You okay?" Steve checked.
