Steve's House in Hawai'i, sunset, some evening

It was very weird that they'd been back in Honolulu for weeks now, solving cases like stolen WWII katanas, attempting to arrest bad guys for parking violations only to have them be criminal genius hackers, clearing bad guys-but-not-for-that-crime's names (you're posthumously welcome, Parrish), and the team (and more importantly, Grace) felt like they'd never been gone.

Maybe if he and Danny never went near an airport again, they wouldn't ricochet back to Fandom? Steve took a drink from his bottle of beer and stared out at the waves, mulling that possibility over.

The rest of Five-0 was laughing on the lanai behind him: their celebration on clearing Parrish's name had moved from a bar to his house as some kind of positive re-enforcement for him picking up the tab this time, apparently. They were currently grilling up steaks, so he couldn't get too upset about it.

He smiled to himself as Chin's voice loudly defending Don Ho's artistic achievements reached him on the shore. Apparently they were back to arguing about music. It felt nice to have his 'ohana around him again.

He wondered how long it would last.

"I was well acquainted with the principal's office, shall we say?"

"I can see that," Steve said, laughing. "Tiny Danny Williams in a tie, explaining in very small words how the teacher was wrong on grading his answer."

"I did not wear a tie when I was a kid, you putz." Not outside of church, at least.

No arguing the other thing, huh?

"That's not how I see it," Steve told him.

Danny rolled his eyes as he took another sip of his beer. "By the way, my folks are gonna be coming into town in a couple weeks. So, if you could refrain from getting me kidnapped around that time..."

These plans meant that whole Maryland thing could not happen again. Straight up.

"Oh, this was not my fault," Steve said. "He scoped out your car."

He grinned. "Your parents are coming?"

"Yeah, now that pop's retired and all." One bad thing happening when family visited last time wasn't enough to cause him concern over this one.

"They staying with you or at a hotel?" Steve asked, settling into his chair and ignoring, you know, Cath and the rest of the team.

Because it was 'Intimate Talks On The Beach' time.

"Me. So, uh, I'm gonna need yo borrow your midlife crisis truck."

"Hey now, Mr. Camaro, it's not a midlife crisis truck," Steve protested.

"Mine is not a mid-life crisis because I never get to drive it," Danny shot right on back.

[grenadesandohana]

"You drive it!" Steve protested. "To and from work. Sometimes."

[hatesparadise]

"That is the bare minimum that I should be driving my own vehicle, Steven."

[grenadesandohana]

"It's probably good for insurance,though."

Literally nothing about that car was good for insurance.

"You're on there, so no." And boy was that something fun to explain to his agent.

Steve laughed. "You mention we're cops, right?"

Which doesn't explain half the damage, honestly.

"At least it can't get worse once Grace turns sixteen." Just terrible crashes and brain damage.

"Sports car in Hawai'i driven by a teenager?" Steve said. "Bet they'll find a way to make it worse, buddy."

"Well, you won't be teaching her to drive, so I think we're safe."

Because Steve teaching her had been on the table at some point?

"I'm a highly trained combat driver," Steve said. "Grace would learn so much more than her high school could teach her."

Like three point turns in the middle of traffic while under fire! So useful.

"I am still questioning how you passed the driver's test, buddy," Danny replied with a deeply put upon sigh.

You'd think this would remind him to check the expiration on his license, and yet--

"With flying colors," Steve said.

AND YET.

"Was the person blind maybe?" Danny asked, settling into some comfortable bickering.

[grenadesandohana]

"Of course not, Danno," Steve said, grinning and finishing up his drink. "That wouldn't be safe. Need another beer?"

"If you're going." Look at what that positive reinforcement was netting him here!
