MCA #0, Friday evening

Steve had been gritting his teeth and pushing through pain all week, nourished only by bland, terrible food, decaf coffee, and stubbornness.

(He was also fueled by his transplant anti-rejection pills, which he'd take for the rest of his life. He hated that.)

He wasn't running, but he was definitely walking up and down the steps of the island until his calves burned, and then did it for another half hour.

(His body had betrayed him after decades of work making it a finely oiled machine. He was punishing it just a little.)

And now he was back in the apartment, looking for something interesting to eat. There was nothing interesting to eat, but he was looking anyway.

Steve's slightly needy, surprised gasp showed how much Steve had missed it too.

Maybe he'd been a little too focused on Steve surviving and Steve getting better. But this was... yeah. This was missed.

Steve slid his hands around the back of Danny's neck, holding him in place as he continued the slow, careful, entirely necessary kissing.

Considering how little they'd been able to just have the normal casual affection leading up to this, it was needed. Very, very strongly needed.

Danny leaned closer as much as he could manage without messing up his stitches.

Steve had needed this so much. He was absolutely shit at talking, more so when it was about something emotional, but he could put his gratitude and his worry into the kiss.

"So glad to have you here," Danny murmured, having far less trouble saying things.

"Me too," Steve said, sliding his hands up to cup Danny's face between them.

"Just took the promise of pizza, huh? Make a New Jersey guy outta you yet."

"Never," Steve said with a tiny smile.

"Eh, no one's perfect, " Danny said with another kiss.

Steve laughed softly. "Don't stop kissing me for it."

"Never." Apparently they just needed this to ease the emotional pressure.

"Thank God," Steve murmured without the sarcastic edge he'd meant to add.

Danny laughed quietly, tilting his head to look at Steve with that sort of fond expression. This was the doofus he had to go and fall for.

"That's a look I've missed," Steve admitted quietly. "I've only been getting the one where you think I'm gonna break right in front of you."

"You did," Danny said, feeling that panic in his chest again. "You lost so much blood, Steve. I had to watch as you bled out because we were in the air."

Steve was just going to ignore the pull on his stitches as he pulled Danny in more tightly. "I'm so sorry."

"I don't want to lose you, you putz," Danny said, clinging to him more than he ought to with his own stitches.

[grenadesandohana]

"Thank you for getting me on the ground," Steve murmured.

[hatesparadise]

"I'm never gonna leave you behind, okay? Never."

If crashing a plane onto a beach and giving part of his liver wasn't enough of a statement...

"Same goes for you," Steve said, not mentioning how he'd shifted the plane so Danny had been protected. If Danny hadn't noticed, he wasn't going to bring it up.

Danny was fully assuming that was a flight maneuver to protect everyone, Steve. And it was a terrible mistake that Steve got hit that bad.

He pulled back just enough to kiss Steve for that. Because it was verbalizing his feelings and that got rewards.

Steve kissed him back. "Still here," he murmured.

"Sure as hell better be," Danny muttered.

"I'm sorry I scared you so badly."
