For so many reasons, honestly whatever reason, Steve was unable to sleep, so he was back in front of the television with a glass of water, watching the British show about restoring antiques.

But the soothing British biceps accents weren't doing their usual magic.

Steve wasn't sure why, but he was going to stay sitting there just in case it started working.

At least until the contestants start talking about glory holes.

"We can always come back to Will later if we don't like it," Steve said, flipping to the other show.

So much talk about the glory holes and how hot and sweaty the work was.

Danny nodded again, shifting until their shoulders were touching again as god intended. "And it's good to branch out sometimes. Stagnation is good for no one."

Not a reference to the firefighter, Steve.

Steve hummed noncommittedly, definitely thinking about the firefighter.

"Oh, this looks dangerous," Danny said only once his attention was pulled away from Steve's weird behavior. Weirder than normal.

Well, talking about why he was being weird would be productive and definitely not Steve's thing.

"Doesn't it?" Steve said, smiling. "It looks fun."

Right now? Danny was on the same, deeply unproductive boat. For fear of losing what he had already.

"Well, there's a thing for you to do with retirement," he suggested.

Steve sniggered. "Stuff hot things up into a glory hole?"

STEVEN. That took like three minutes.

"Steve," Danny said, sighing in annoyance because, oh look at that. Someone was turning red.

Stupid Irish skin.

"You must've arrested at least a few retirees trying that," Steve continued.

Now you were just being mean, Steven.

"I hate you so much."

[grenadesandohana]

"So you did," Steve concluded, looking delighted.

Was this really a conversation he wanted to have? Was it?

"I--yes, it happened when I was a beat cop," he sputtered. "I didn't work vice or anything."

"The veterans were breaking in the rookies?" Steve guessed.

"You remember my FTO," Danny replied with a sigh. The one whose knee Danny put a bullet in.

"He was a real son of a bitch," Steve said in a tone that said Steve would've helped put another bullet in him.

[hatesparadise]

"Thought it was a toughening up thing at the time," Danny replied, watching the screen. Because that was always a hard thing to think about.

Steve's arm went around Danny's shoulders. "He was an asshole."

[hatesparadise]

"Most of 'em were," Danny said, glancing over at him instead of the molten glass that was being formed into things on the screen. "Ended up mentioning him to Annie after... everything at that convention."

"Yeah?" Steve said. "What'd you tell her about him?"

[hatesparadise]

"What he did back then." Not to Grace. That would have been too hard to mention at that moment. "That it can be hard to go against the people in charge when you're fresh on the job."

"That was probably really good for her to hear right then," Steve said.

Danny flexed his hand into a fist for a moment before relaxing it again to keep from doing something dumb like reaching out to grab onto Steve's arm.

This was ridiculous and dumb. Second guessing himself in regards to Steve wasn't how he functioned.

"I hope so."

"You okay?" Steve asked, frowning.

[hatesparadise]

"Yeah," Danny said. "Yeah, I'm fine. Weird week."

Gonna get weirder, but at least that would be a good distraction!

"Very weird week," Steve agreed, moving a little more into Danny's space.
