Baltimore, Saturday afternoon [NFB]

Steve had been dragging Danny through the Baltimore Aquarium (look, sharks were awesome, it was just demonstrable fact) when his phone rang.

"McGarrett," he replied, frowning lightly, and then harder as his listened.

"Danno, we gotta go," he said, taking off towards the truck. "The fake feds've kidnapped Parrish's daughter."

The wooooorst part of the job. Steve kept his now-sodden shirt pressed against the wound entirely because pulling away now would just be tacky.

The sirens, at least, got louder and louder as an ambulance arrived. "Steve, go get them," Danny said, going to swap places with him for it.

Steve shot him a grateful look as he got up and went out the door to greet the EMTs, shirtless and with bloody hands.

The EMTs were probably used to that, right?

Oh, for sure.

"They're gonna do what they can for him," Danny promised.

"It's not going to be much," Steve murmured back. He'd been in too many war zones to kid himself.

"What cam you tell us about them?" Danny asked as the paramedics took over, seperating the daughter and father briefly.

"There were two of them," she said between ragged breaths. "Dressed in ties and dress pants." She looked at Steve. "Both a little shorter than you, but not as short as you," she said, nodding to Danny. "One white, one Asian."

"Did you see which way they went after?" Danny asked, nodding at that as her father was loaded into the stretcher by fast moving paramedics. But, yeah, it wasn't looking great.

She pointed down the street before rushing to get into the ambulance before it took off.

"How reliable do you think that is?" Steve asked.

"Better than nothing," Danny said with a sigh. "C'mon. Shirt. I'll call Chin."

"Maybe there's footage of the street," Steve said. "We can get lucky and see if they had a car or split up."

"Good idea," Danny said, fishing out the wet wipes to clean their hands first and foremost.

They really had these things down to a science.

Depressingly competent!

"Thank you," Steve said with a little smile.

"I'll see what we can pull on the traffic cameras," Danny said once he was clean.

"Unless they're very seasoned at shooting people, they're probably speeding," Steve said, nodding.

"Here's hoping," Danny said, sifting through the footage before he reached into the glove box for a kid snack to shove at Steve.

It was a choice between eating gummy sharks or having a sugar crash and Steve would take the gummies, thank you very much.

"Where are we heading?" Steve asked, turning on the truck.

Danny squinted at the footage that they for sure had access to right away. Because this was a CBS show that didn't want to bore you with things like subpoenas or FOIAs. "That direction, looks like they might have been using a vacant home as a stakeout location."

Pfft, that part is boring.

"Roger that," Steve said, following where Danny had pointed. "Maybe we can some prints from the second guy."

"Here's hoping they're dumb enough to still be there," Danny agreed. "Park down the block, yeah?"

Oh, like Steve wasn't already doing that.

"On it," Steve said. "Watch as we go for any car that doesn't seem to belong here."

Other than theirs, of course.

"On it," Danny echoed, slouching a little as he looked around.

"Especially out of state plates," Steve said. "That tends to be a rental car."

Danny lifted a hand like he was offended Steve even felt the need to share that with him. "I am a detective, Steven."

"And a very good one," Steve said with a smile.
