Steve had been gritting his teeth and pushing through pain all week, nourished only by bland, terrible food, decaf coffee, and stubbornness.

(He was also fueled by his transplant anti-rejection pills, which he'd take for the rest of his life. He hated that.)

He wasn't running, but he was definitely walking up and down the steps of the island until his calves burned, and then did it for another half hour.

(His body had betrayed him after decades of work making it a finely oiled machine. He was punishing it just a little.)

And now he was back in the apartment, looking for something interesting to eat. There was nothing interesting to eat, but he was looking anyway.

"Oh no, that's too obvious," Danny said. "I sneak 'em into my red sauce."

"Smart," Steve said with a little smile.

Danny snorted, pulling their hands up to kiss the back of Steve's. "Glad you approve."

Steve squeezed Danny's fingers. "I have a lot to learn."

"Oh, that's the fun thing with parenting. You never stop learning."

Hence the constant worry.

"Well, that's just exhausting," Steve said.

"Oh, it's worth it," Danny said, glancing over at him.

Steve smiled. "I guess I'll learn that, too."

"You've got time." And maybe that was a little strained still.

Steve squeezed Danny's hand. "Still here," he confirmed.

"Let's keep it that way, yeah?" The kids would miss him.

"I'm not trying to hurt myself," Steve muttered.

"I think you wanna be back to 100 percent and to forget the limitations," Danny countered.

"Of course I do," Steve said.

[hatesparadise]

"You still have stitches," Danny replied. "A lot of 'em."

[grenadesandohana]

"They're healing!" Steve said.

[hatesparadise]

"And they heal faster when you're not trying to agitate 'em."

A jungle gym, Steve? Really?

But it was that or losing at paintball, Danny!

"I signed up for the classes," Steve said. "I should go."

Paintball wasn't that important!

"Sure. You can take it wasy, though."

Paintball was SUPER IMPORTANT.

"I'll take it easy in Skywalker's weird class," Steve promised.

"Thank you." Until Steve chafed again over it.

Give him another week coming in last and it'll be all over.

"You're welcome," Steve said with dignity.

Damn it, Steven!

"But first. Pizza. We're gettin' plain just to be safe."

And because Danny preferred it.

"Maybe light on the sauce, too."

"Light sauce," Danny said, blanching at the idea of heartburn right now.
